Curious about personal growth at Attentive? Our Revenue team shares their top tips for personal and professional success.

One of the most frequently asked questions the Attentive People Team gets is, “How do I continue to grow professionally?” While the answer might differ for everyone, one thing is clear: no matter the coaching or support available, the ultimate responsibility for career development lies within ourselves.

Career growth isn't a one-time event. It's an opportunity to continuously learn, explore new challenges, and figure out what excites you. Whether you're looking for a new role or want to grow in your current position, getting the job is just the beginning.

We’re highlighting the career journeys of two Attentive team members, Haley and Michael, from our Revenue team. Since Day 1, they’ve taken ownership of their careers, relying on their strengths and resources to make an impact. Their stories show that growth isn't just a goal, but a mindset.

Meet the team

Haley joined Attentive in 2021 as a Sales Development Representative (SDR). With no prior sales experience, she was drawn to the brands Attentive works with—many of which were her personal favorites. “I was a text subscriber myself, so I knew the product worked and I was excited to sell it,” she recalls. Today, Haley is an Account Executive (AE) on our Mid-Market team.

While Haley was honing her Sales chops, Michael was creating strong relationships with customers on our Customer Success team. Referred by a friend, Michael joined Attentive in 2020 as a Senior Customer Success Manager (CSM). Today, he manages a team of CSMs who champion the brands we work with every day.

How it started: learning the ropes

For Michael, his first year at Attentive was all about learning. “I spent my first year or so just trying to get my feet under me and learn as much as possible,” he recalls. His natural curiosity and eagerness to learn caught his manager’s attention, setting him on a path to leadership. So when a role opened up, Michael jumped at the opportunity and got the job.

Haley had her sights set on an Account Executive (AE) role from the start. “I knew I wanted to be an AE, so I practiced a lot. I put time on the AEs’ calendars so I could practice my pitch and learn more about the product.”

Her preparation paid off when she interviewed and landed her first AE role on the SMB team. “That’s where I learned the most about sales and became truly passionate about it.”

You got the promotion. Now what?

Getting promoted is a major milestone and the start of an exciting new chapter. With new roles come new opportunities to grow, and both Haley and Michael eagerly embraced the chance to learn and expand their skills.

“The space we’re in is evolving rapidly. So getting comfortable with not always being comfortable is key,” Michael advises.

“When I first joined Attentive, the pace at which we needed to move was a big challenge. I worked on my organizational skills and implemented my own internal processes to help keep track of things. Now as a team lead, I had the processes and product knowledge down, but needed to hone my management skills,” he continues. “I needed to learn how to coach, give feedback, build people up, and lead with empathy.”

Haley also faced growing pains after transitioning from SDR to AE. “Owning the entire sales process was a big leap. At first it was intimidating to stand on my own,” but she leaned into the challenge and found support along the way.

Building your personal board of directors

One key to career growth at Attentive is building a strong support system. For Michael, it was hugely helpful to develop relationships with teammates who could complement his strengths. “I spent time building an internal network For example, I wasn’t a technical whiz, so I found people who had those strengths.”

Haley actively sought guidance from her manager and our Sales Enablement team. “My manager would hop on calls with me, and I’d emulate how he spoke about our product,” she recalls. This support, coupled with her strong work ethic and high aspirations, helped her grow into her new responsibilities.

How it’s going: succeeding together

Today, both Michael and Haley continue to grow at Attentive, but they credit their success not just to their work, but to the support they felt from the people around them.

Michael, who works out of the NYC office, speaks highly of the team: “I’m surrounded by some of the best talent I’ve ever seen,” he says of his coworkers-turned-friends.

Haley, who works remotely, feels equally connected. “I love the flexibility of working remotely, but I still have close, meaningful relationships with my team.” Ultimately, it’s the people at Attentive who inspire each other to be the best versions of themselves.

Advice for growing your career

If you’re ready to take the next step in your career journey, Michael and Haley have some parting advice.

Michael stresses the importance of building your network and support system. “Find people who help you get stronger,” he suggests. “Build your brand, get your name out there, and talk to everyone.” When it came time for his promotion to Manager of Customer Success, it was his internal network that helped him make the leap.

Haley encourages you to take a leap of faith, even if it feels daunting. She didn’t have a sales background when she joined Attentive, but believing in the product and her ability to sell it paid off. “Joining Attentive was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” she says confidently.

At the end of the day, career growth is all about investing in your own journey, building relationships, and continuously learning—just like Haley and Michael have done. So, are you ready for your next step?
